At this time (एतस्मिन् काले) (i.e. at the conclusion of the śrāddha) there is the offering (प्रदानम्) of perfumes, garlands, incense, lamps and clothes (गन्धमाल्यधूपदीपाच्छादनानाम्).

Commentary: इदानीं प्राचीनावीती भवेत् – now he should become prācināvītī. ततो गन्धादिनि पञ्च ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददाति – then these (gandha etc.) should be given to five brāhmaṇas.

Having taken (उद्‍धृत्य) the cooked food (from the sthālīpāka of the piṇḍapitṛyajña), and mixing it with ghee (घृताक्तमन्नम्) he requests permission (अनुज्ञापयति) (of the present brāhmaṇas) by saying (इति) “I will offer it to the sacred fire (अग्नौ करिष्ये)”, or “we two will offer it to the sacred fire (अग्नौ करवै)”, or “we all will offer it to the sacred fire (अग्नौ करवाणि)”.

(Then the brāhmaṇas) should give their assent (प्रत्यभ्यनुज्ञा) by saying (इति) – ’you do it’ (क्रियताम्), ‘you both do it’ (कुरुष्व) or ‘you all do it’ (कुरु).

Then (अथ) he makes offerings to the fire (अग्नौ जुहोति), as described earlier (यथा उक्तम् पुरस्तात).

Note: This is a reference to the piṇḍapitṛyajña as described in ASS 2.6.

Or (वा), on the giving of permission (अभ्यनुज्ञायाम्), in the hands (पाणिषु एव) (of the brāhmaṇas)

Note: This is applicable only if there is no fire.

‘The gods (देवाः) verily (वै) receive offerings through agni (अग्निमुखाः), and the ancestors (पितरः) through the hand (पाणिमुखाः)’ – thus it is said in the brāhmaṇa (इति ह ब्राह्मणम्).

Note: Offerings to the gods should be placed in the fire, and to the ancestors, in the hands of representative brāhmaṇas.

If the offering is made in the hands (यदि पाणीषु), then he should serve (अनुदिशति) a different meal (अन्यत् अन्नम्) (to the brāhmaṇas) who have performed ācamana (आचान्तेषु).

Note: The food that is served as a meal (to the brāhmaṇas) should be different from what was offered to the ancestors through them.

The food (अन्नम्) (that is left over from the offerings to the ancestors) should be added to the food (अन्ने) (that is served as a meal).

(Food) given in plenty (सृष्टम् दत्तम्) causes prosperity (ऋध्नुकम् इति).

Having seen (ज्ञात्वा) that (the ) have had their fill (तृप्तान्), he should recite the madhumatī ṛks for them (RV 1.90.6-8) ( मधुमतीः श्रावयेत्) as well as (इति च) ’अक्षन्नमीमदन्त’ (RV 1.82.2)

Having asked (पृष्ट्वा) them whether they are satisfied (सम्पन्नम् इति), and having taken (उद्‍धृत्य) (as much of) the remaining cooked food (यद् यद् अन्नम् उपभुक्तम्) along with (what is left over in) the sthālīpāka (तत् तत् स्थालीपाकेन सह) , as is required for the pinda (पिण्डार्थम्), he should offer the rest (शेषं निवेदयेत्) (to the brāhmaṇas).

On their agreeing (अभिमते) (to take the food) or leaving it to him (अनुमते वा) (to use it in any way he pleases), and when they have finished eating (भुक्तवत्सु) he should prepare the pinda offerings (पिण्डान् निदध्यात्), before they have performed the ācamana (अनाचान्तेषु) (signifying completion of the meal).

Some (एके) say that this can be done after they have performed the ācamana (आचान्तेषु).

Having strewn the food (अन्नम् प्रकीर्य) (near the left overs) and wearing the yajñopavīta in the normal way (उपवीय), he should dismiss them (विसृजेत्) saying (इति) – ‘Please utter (उच्यताम्) Om svadhā (ॐ स्वधा)’

अनुजानीयादुत्थापयेदित्यर्थः – he requests them to get up after the meal. ते च ’ॐ स्वधा’ इति प्रत्यूचुः – they reply by saying ‘ॐ स्वधा’.

Or by saying

Note: In this case they also reply with ‘अस्तु स्वधा’.
